Here’s the interesting part: cigar farmers usually remove those flowers before they fully develop, a process called topping.

Why? Once the flower is removed, the plant stops putting as much energy into producing seeds and redirects more of its resources toward the remaining leaves. This helps the leaves grow larger, thicker, and richer in oils—exactly what growers want for premium cigar tobacco.

Farmers may also remove small side shoots called suckers that appear afterward, further concentrating the plant's energy into its prized leaves.
